Our Practices

Regenerative, ORganic Farming

At Grassway Farm, we believe sustainable isn’t enough. Our goal is to continually refine regenerative organic farming practices so we can become a truly eco-friendly farm. We’re not “there” yet—but we’re doing the work. That starts with the soil, because that’s where the magic happens. By supporting soil microbiology, we’re rebuilding living systems that pull carbon from the atmosphere and store it in the ground. As this biology is restored, erosion decreases, water-holding capacity increases, and the land becomes more resilient—producing healthier, more nutrient-dense food and feed.

So how do we do it? We use outside-the-box approaches like cover crops, which fill the empty space between field crops and keep the soil covered for up to 12 months instead of just three. These crops armor the soil against weather extremes, cycle and retain nutrients for future crops, and build organic matter. We also plant polycultures—diverse mixes of plants grown together. This diversity feeds both our above-ground livestock and our below-ground livestock (the microorganisms), creating healthier animals and healthier soil.

And yes, we do “crazy” things—like planting trees in our pastures. These trees pull deeply buried nutrients up into their leaves, which return to the soil after leaf drop. They provide shade for livestock, habitat for wildlife, and many of them even produce edible nuts. This system—where land, livestock, wildlife, and people coexist—is called permaculture.

Our livestock practices reflect the same care. We are certified organic, meaning non-GMO and antibiotic-free. Cattle over six months of age receive at least 30% of their summer feed from mixed grass pastures. While grazing, we mimic historic bison herds—large numbers on small areas for short periods—moving cattle multiple times per week. This allows for maximum pasture rest, increased grass production, and improved soil health. What it all comes down to is stewardship.

We want to care for our land and livestock the right way—and help build a nation rooted in climate-smart, farm-to-fork, community-supported agriculture. One that can change Big Ag—and the world—one bite at a time.

You can change agriculture. You just have to support the people creating the kind of agriculture you believe in. Come join us on our journey.
