Our Story
My love and admiration for the dairy cow is what pulled me headfirst into farming. I couldn't help myself. Around the age of 12, I even dared to complain to my dad about the quality of bulls we were getting from the semen salesman. His response was simple: "Fine, you pick the bulls." By the summer I turned 16, I was a certified artificial insemination technician. Then, in March of my junior year of high school, I came home from a Brown Swiss sale with a load of cattle that had pretty much drained my life savings. That night at supper, my dad looked at me and said, "Looks like your new pickup is standing in my barn." We all make sacrifices.
As my herd grew over the next few years, I attended Iowa State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Dairy Science with a minor in Agronomy. During the week, I went to classes; on weekends, I came home to work on the farm. Just a couple of days after graduation, I was farming full-time with my parents, living the dream.
I returned to the original farm my grandfather purchased in 1964 (only the third owner since it was first settled) and began rotationally grazing the dairy herd. My small herd of Brown Swiss cattle continued to grow, and it needed a name-something special, something unique, something meaningful. Grazing cattle has always fed my soul, and from that connection, Grassway Farm was born.
Day in and day out, I studied the cows, watching, learning, and constantly tweaking management to improve their health and production. While my formal education came from ISU, my most valuable education came from the cows themselves. That belief led me to adopt a quote I still live by: "If science and nature don't agree... throw away the book." That mindset pushed our farming practices from conventional to organic. At first, we chose organic because we thought it would be more profitable. But that quickly changed. When we switched from conventional feeds-grown with synthetic fertilizers and chemical sprays-to fully organic feeds, the cows told us everything we needed to know. Within just a few weeks, their health noticeably improved. I was hooked.
From that moment on, regenerative agriculture wasn't just a business decision-it was a calling. It proved to be better for the land, better for the cows, and most importantly, a way to continue our family farm while growing food, animals, and families the right way.

Scott has been farming since he could walk and full-time for the past 23 years. His passion for cows has grown into a deep commitment to grazing, soil health, water management, and regenerative agriculture. In 2025, he was named Fayette County/Regional Conservation Farmer and elected to the Fayette County Soil and Water Conservation District Board. Through speaking engagements and on-farm field days, Scott actively shares his knowledge and learns alongside others. His understanding of soils and willingness to think differently sets him apart-and ensures that the land and the people who depend on it are cared for with intention.
